Three Days Workshop - Data Analysis and Interpretation in Psychological Research - 15-17 February 2013

Three Days Workshop
(Data Analysis and Interpretation in Psychological Research)

Date: 15-17 February 2013
Proposed to Organize by Department of Psychology

Psychology is a science and it relies on scientific research to study behaviors and mental processes. In comparison to personal observations and experiences, scientific research is systematic and it results in reliable and objective scientific findings.

Research is central to all the activities of psychologists. A key assumption of psychology is that a first-rate psychologist – researcher or practitioner – needs to be familiar with the way in which good research is carried out. This enables them to determine the adequacy and value of the findings claimed from a particular study. The scientific method has four major steps to it, which fall in logical order: conceptualizing the problem, collecting the data, analyzing the data, and drawing conclusions. After completing the first three steps, the fourth one is to analyze the data and interpret it to draw conclusions. In order to analyze the data, psychologists rely on statistical techniques, which are mathematical methods.

SPSS is a Windows based program that can be used to perform data entry and analysis and to create tables and graphs. All of these tasks occupy a pivotal position in extracting the meaning from raw data in psychological research. SPSS is capable of handling large amounts of data. It is commonly used in the Social Sciences, so familiarity with this program is a very important issue for students undertaking dissertations and research projects. The main purpose of the workshop is to help students to get trained in data entry, analysis and interpretation using SPSS software.

Workshop will provide participants a comprehensive introduction of SPSS software and hands on experience in entering the data, performing calculations, interpretation of results and graphical representation of data. As using appropriate statistical methods, getting precise results and analyzing the data are very important for conducting quality research work, this workshop would be highly fruitful for students aspiring to handle the research projects in the future efficiently and independently.
